7 Years at Beit Mery

Pic. 1: The Beit Mery #Composting & #Recycling facility has been 7 years in continuous operation. Facility runs under a #zerowaste to the landfill technical model and has no access to a #landfill. The following thread shows the statistical results thus far (8 Sep 2016 – 31 Dec 23) of processing 35,586 TONS of Municipal Solid Waste.

Pic. 2: Waste stream analysis of Beit Mery town showed the compostable fraction to be 78%. We use In-Vessel composting process to manage this large part of the incoming waste.

Pic. 3: #Compost produced at Beit Mery has been consistently analysed and shown to be of Class A+ quality. In these times of financial crisis having a local reliable source of natural fertilizers is key for any #foodsecurity strategy.

Pic. 4: #Plastics have been sorted by type and channeled back into the #local #recycling #industries. Data shown covers the period from 8 Sep 2016 to 31 Dec 2023.

Pic. 5: If left under the current management model of #waste management of the #Lebanese government, these 1.6 million kilos of #plastics would have ended up in Jdeideh #landfill. Instead every ounce of them has been #recycled.

Pic. 6: The #glass recycling #industry in #Lebanon has been struggling for a few years now due to high cost of #energy. However having #local #glass_manufacturing is a key parameter for a sound food security strategy. We currently import our glass #packaging from Syria, Egypt & Europe. Cedar Environmental works with glass blowers to recycle glass generated from the Beit Mery facility. #GGRIL collection is on display every Saturday at Souk el Tayeb in Mar Mikhael - Achrafieh

Pic. 7: #Lebanon still has 4 #conversion factories which recycle #paper & #cartons. It is imperative to support these factories by sending them raw materials to work with instead of sending them to the #Landfill.Pic. 8: Due to the high cost of #energy #Lebanon has lost the ability to #recycle #metals locally. All sorted metal types are exported either to Turkey or Italy.

Pic. 9: Showing the results of incoming waste by month over the 7 years that the facility has been in operation. Beit Mery is the only facility in Lebanon that adopts a “pay-as-you-throw” model of calculating the amount to be paid by the participating municipalities…

Pic. 10: Breakdown of total processed tons on an annual basis. Notice the drop of waste generated as the country delves deeper and deeper in the economic crisis. There is a slight increase in waste generated in 2023 compared to the last year but not back to 2020 or 2019 levels.
