How We Diverted 5 Million Plastic Bottles from the Landfill

We started the "Street Recycling Bins Project" after a heated debate with an ex-president of the municipality of Beirut: he was pushing the incinerators agenda and insisting that Lebanese citizens do not sort, so better to burn everything.

As soon as the garbage crisis ended in Sep 2016, we built large plastic bins from our ECOBOARDS made from 100% recycled plastics and connected with like-minded companies from the private sector to launch a wide campaign to place these street recycling bins all over greater Beirut area and prove that ONCE GIVEN THE INFRASTRUCTURE THE CITIZENS OF LEBANON WILL SORT.

At one point in time, before the financial crisis hit, we had about 20 active locations with street recycling bins. Today, we are proud to announce that despite the beating this project got from the crisis and then from the scavengers who systematically broke the bins to take what's inside and although we are down to about 7 active locations, the project is still ongoing and today August 13th 2025 marks the 2705 consecutive days of continuous operations.

We have lost 90% of the private sector support but we still run the remaining points with great success. At todays' date we had successfully diverted 145 tons of plastics that's about 5 MILLION units of 1.5 Liters size water bottles. We also diverted 278 Tons of Glass from the landfills (without counting the 125 tons of glass from the beirut port explosion) 278 tons of glass are about 1.2 MILLION beer bottles. As for paper and cartons, we diverted about 123 tons which correspond to about 1473 trees to produce such quantity of paper.

Sorting & Recycling work, you just need to have the patience of seeing it through. It is unfortunate that the conversation about incineration is resurfacing and pushing the wrong impression that it is a CURE ALL solution. It is Not. [More Info]

أطلقنا "مشروع حاويات إعادة التدوير في الشوارع" بعد نقاش حاد مع رئيس بلدية بيروت السابق، حيث كان يروج لخطط المحارق ويصر على أن المواطنين اللبنانيين لا يقومون بالفرز، لذا من الأفضل حرق كل شيء.

بمجرد انتهاء أزمة النفايات في سبتمبر 2016، قمنا ببناء حاويات بلاستيكية كبيرة من ألواح "إيكو بوردز" المصنوعة من البلاستيك المعاد تدويره بنسبة 100%، وتواصلنا مع شركات ذات أهداف مشتركة من القطاع الخاص لإطلاق حملة واسعة لوضع حاويات إعادة التدوير هذه في جميع أنحاء منطقة بيروت الكبرى، لإثبات أن المواطنين اللبنانيين سيقومون بالفرز فور توفير البنية التحتية لهم. في فترة ما، قبل الأزمة المالية، كان لدينا حوالي 20 موقعاً نشطاً مزوداً بحاويات إعادة تدوير في الشوارع.

اليوم، نفخر بالإعلان أنه على الرغم من الصعوبات التي واجهها المشروع بسبب الأزمة ثم بسبب النباشين الذين كسروا الحاويات بشكل منهجي لأخذ ما بداخلها، ورغم أننا انخفضنا إلى حوالي 7 مواقع نشطة، إلا أن المشروع لا يزال مستمراً. ويصادف اليوم، 13 أغسطس 2025، مرور 2705 يوماً متتالياً من العمليات المستمرة. لقد فقدنا 90% من دعم القطاع الخاص، لكننا لا نزال ندير النقاط المتبقية بنجاح كبير.

حتى هذا التاريخ، نجحنا في تحويل 145 طناً من البلاستيك، أي ما يعادل حوالي 5 ملايين وحدة من عبوات المياه بحجم 1.5 لتر. كما قمنا بتحويل 278 طناً من الزجاج بعيداً عن مدافن النفايات (لا يشمل ذلك 125 طناً من الزجاج من انفجار مرفأ بيروت)، وهو ما يعادل حوالي 1.2 مليون زجاجة بيرة. أما بالنسبة للورق والكرتون، فقد حولنا حوالي 123 طناً، وهو ما يعادل إنتاج الورق من حوالي 1473 شجرة.

الفرز وإعادة التدوير هم السبيل للنجاح في إدارة النفايات، كل ما تحتاجه هو الصبر للاستمرار. ومن المؤسف أن الحديث عن المحارق يعود للظهور مجدداً، مما يروج للانطباع الخاطئ بأنها الحل الشامل، وهذا بالطبع ليس صحيحا
